It is official, Legally Blonde 3 is happening!
Witherspoon announced that it’s a go to her legion of Instagram follower by posting a short video of her dressed as the Elle Woods with the caption “it’s true… #LegallyBlonde3.”
This comes after months of speculation about whether or not the franchise will be getting another instalment. Fans didn’t know whether or not they would get the third Elle Woods movie they have craved for.
E! News has given a few other snippets of information about the new film; they have reported that the film will also be produced by Witherspoon and that the pair who adapted the novel for the original film, Karen McCullah and Kristen “Kiwi” Smith, will write the film. We don’t about you guys, but that sounds great to us.
Witherspoon had previously said that there was no plans for a third movie, stating "We don't have any plans for that movie. Ask MGM. I don't know. They had an idea. I don't know."
However, since that interview with E! News in 2015, things have evidently changed.
She did give a slightly more positive interview a few months later, adding: “A lot of writers over the years have come up with different ideas for it. I actually think it's kind of great right now, because we're talking about women in politics and how important that is to get more women. I think it'd be kind of a cool thing to have her be a Supreme Court justice or someone who runs for office—like president!"
A year later in a social media Q&A, Witherspoon added: "I loved making Legally Blonde because I love pink! It was really fun! I got to wear all of the amazing costumes. I also got to work with a dog every day. I'm obsessed with dogs. I love dogs!"
The dog that became so famous in the first movie has actually passed away since, so Witherspoon will actually get to work alongside another pooch. It will be interesting to see whether or not this movie will be dedicated to the former pup.
The original film was a box office smash, grossing $141 million on just a $18 million budget. The sequel also did incredibly well, grossing $124 million on a $45 million budget. The third movie will be hoping to make even more cash.
Co-stars Luke Wilson and Mary Lynn Rajskub have added their support for the movie.
